Steampunk Mechanic by aternox Steampunk Mechanic by aternox
My Halloween costume this year. I had been working on an articulated hand and expanded it into the costume.

The arm and palm are plywood, the fingers and thumb pieces are wooden handles from BBQ forks. metal hinges and small eyebolts at each joint. then along the back of each joint is a spring and along the front runs the cord which is tied to a metal ring sewn on the first knuckle of each finger on a glove. some upholstery vinyl as a forearm guard to hold it on.

Worked great, the fingers moved as mine did, oh and metal (tin) along the back of the hand gauntlet style.

awesome how long did it take you to make it and how heavy is it? ( i suppose it depends on the material used)

i took about a week of effort, but spread out over several months of tinkering here and there. It's probably somewhere between 5 to 10 pounds since i used wood and real steel.

Nice work. I've done similar work with foam and fishing wire so it would be safe to use in LARP battles :)

I used nails, but to do it again I'd use a countersink bit and then use small screws to hold it on.

i've seen your tutorial for your mechanical hand, it's help me a lot for my project, i want to make the same hand, but with the original hand covered (to looks like the hand of Hellboy) have you got a blue print, or a draw with Scale?

And the whole costume looks really good. Very nice.

I just picked up all my materials to copy this design, but instead of the BBQ forks (because I couldn't find any shaped like that for some reason, even though I know I've seen them), I picked up a cylindrical cut of ply. Curiously enough, do you have the dimensions of the finger pieces so I know how long to cut them?

:iconaternox:

i don't have them written down or anything. but the index fingers digits were roughly 1 1/2 inches, 1 inch, 2 1/4 inches.
